→DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING FOR CREATIVE PROJECTS←
Stuck halfway through your first novel? In need of one last read before you start querying with your creative nonfiction manuscript? Looking for someone to help you structure and flesh out your story collection? From first-timers to experienced writers, I’m here to help you bring your words and ideas to their fullest realization on the page.
What is developmental editing—and is that all you do?
Developmental editing (sometimes known as manuscript consulting) typically comes in when you have a full draft of a project and are looking for big-picture feedback to guide you in revision as you work towards a final draft. I love working with writers who’ve made a first pass at getting their ideas on the page and are ready for outside input.
That said, there are plenty of ways that I can support your process if you are in the earlier or later stages of your project. If you’re looking for feedback and suggestions to help you complete or get deeper into a project, I offer one-on-one coaching over however many weeks or months you need.
If you are nearing a final draft, you may be ready for a line edit—a close reading and annotation of the manuscript at the sentence level, as well as big-picture feedback addressing your questions about the work.
If you’re uncertain what kind of editing support you need right now, don’t worry—be in touch and we’ll figure it out!
Why are you the right editor for my project?
I have nearly two decades of experience as a published writer, teacher of creative writing, and developmental editor. I’ve encountered and helped to shape an incredibly broad array of writing projects, from commercially oriented fiction to experimental hybrid texts. I’ve got strong roots in queer, small press, and DIY music communities, and while I certainly enjoy working with projects/clients beyond those spheres, I just may be your ideal reader if you travel within them.
To get more specific: I am the author of the story collection Hurricane Envy (Rescue Press, 2025) and the novel Dryland (Tin House, 2015), as well as a longtime teacher of creative writing both in (Reed College, University of Oregon, Portland State University) and out (my backyard) of academic settings. I have worked as a developmental editor for fiction and creative nonfiction projects both independently and for The Reading List editorial services agency and as co-founding editor of New Herring Press, where I worked on titles by Justin Torres, Lynne Tillman, Deb Olin Unferth, Bhanu Kapil, and others.
